Swimming pool to benefit from first phase of citywide investment

Portsmouth’s Charter Community Sports Centre is set to benefit from the first phase of a multi-million pound investment into the city’s leisure facilities.

Work to upgrade aeration equipment in the swimming pool area and improve energy efficiency will be done as part of plans to enhance sports facilities at Portsmouth City Council owned sites, operated by BH Live.

The rest of the centre will remain open as usual and customers will be able to use alternative swimming pools at Eastney, Mountbatten and Pyramids as part of their membership and on a pay as you go basis.

Other pool-based activities have been relocated to other venues.

The project demonstrates continued commitment from the council and partners to develop the city’s health and wellbeing facilities for the benefit of its residents and visitors. This will encourage more people to lead a more active life.

Cllr Linda Symes, the council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure & Sport, said: “As a council we are fully dedicated to encouraging more people to lead an active lifestyle because of the health and wellbeing benefits it brings. The work at Charter Community Sports Centre is relatively small but will ensure the swimming pool is great environment for people to use and it is symbolic because it’s the first piece of work in a bigger scheme that will see improvements made across the city.”

“This investment will significantly improve the quality of air circulation in the pool hall, which is important for recreational swimming and class enjoyment. It will also improve the venue’s energy efficiency and improve the standard of the facilities overall, says Claire Oatridge, BH Live’s Regional Head of Operations.

“We have worked closely with the council to ensure there is as little disruption as possible and are very much looking forward to reopening the improved pool to our customers.”
