Mountbatten boosts green credentials

Mountbatten Leisure Centre, Portsmouth, is revamping the lights across its eight indoor court sports hall to improve the overall customer experience and boost the venue’s green credentials.

In a partnership project between Portsmouth City Council, who own the venue, and operator BH Live, the project will see 128 lights removed and replaced with the latest LED fittings especially designed for sports halls.

The work is being carried out by Hampshire-based Corrigenda in conjunction with the Council and BH Live, over a four week period from Monday 24 April-19 May. It will be phased over this time to minimise any disruption to customers.

Courts will still be available for most activities and customers will be directed to Wimbledon Park Sports Centre and Charter Community Sports Centre for racquet sports if they is a particularly high demand during that period.

Not only will the revamp improve the quality of lighting in the sports hall, which is important for sporting activities and events, it is also projected to save in the region of 69,300 kWh a year. It will also reduce the requirement for ongoing maintenance and replacement as the lifespan of the LED fittings is considerably longer than other more traditional sources.

“This is just the one of the many projects that is set to enhance the facilities and reduce energy consumption at Mountbatten, says Claire Oatridge, BH Live’s Regional Head of Operations.

“It’s especially important to event organisers, especially for televised events, that we offer the best possible facilities to showcase their event. We have worked closely with the Council to ensure there is as little disruption as possible and are very much looking forward to seeing the end result.”

Cllr Linda Symes, Portsmouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure & Sport, said: “Not only will this improve the facility for customers it will also save money on running costs, and I expect this to be the first of many leisure centre improvements the council and BH Live will partner on.”

More LED lighting schemes are planned to be carried out later this year alongside the installation of a new combined heat and power (CHP) unit. This will improve energy efficiency and boost the venue’s green credentials even further.
