City’s solar installation lights up Gymnastics Centre

To improve energy efficiency and reduce the city’s carbon footprint a solar PV installation has been mounted on Portsmouth Gymnastics Centre’s rooftop.

The 180 panel system is expected to generate 48,000 kWh a year, offsetting in the region of fifteen tonnes of carbon.

This is Portsmouth City Council’s second solar PV installation which has recently been commissioned in partnership with the venue’s operators BH Live. A 120 panel system has also been operating at Mountbatten Leisure Centre since May 2016 and has already generated enough energy to power thirty standard three bedroom houses for a year; offsetting twenty seven and a half tonnes of carbon.

The system at Portsmouth Gymnastics Centre has been designed by Kent based Solar Advanced Systems.

Rob Cunningham, BH Live’s Divisional General Manager said,

Working with the council, the recent solar installations, alongside LED lighting schemes and Building Management System installations are already having a really positive impact. We are simultaneously reducing our carbon footprint and energy costs which means we are operating more responsibly and sustainably.”

Councillor Dave Ashmore, Portsmouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Community Safety added,

“The installation at Portsmouth Gymnastics Centre is one of several projects being carried out across the city by the council’s energy services team to improve our green credentials. The council’s energy projects ensure our carbon footprint is kept as low as possible to help slow down the impact of climate change.  The council’s PV installations offset over 1,600 tonnes of carbon per year.”
