British and Dutch medical societies team up for major congress on organ transplantation

The British Transplantation Society (BTS) is teaming up with its Dutch counterpart, Nederlandse Transplantatie Vereniging (NTV), for a joint annual congress at Bournemouth International Centre, 11-13 March 2015.

The event features a programme full of topical issues and contributions from leading international authorities in their fields. Every opportunity will be taken to explore similarities and differences in the way key issues are approached in the UK and Netherlands – and the event is expected to evoke lively and informative debate and discussion.

Prof Derek Manas, BTS Vice President, says,

“We are looking forward to this meeting as it’s the first joint venture with the Dutch Transplant society . With 249 of their members joining us in Bournemouth, I’m sure it will add a whole new perspective and interesting dimension to this year’s BTS.”

Pat Coyne, BH Live Director of Venues adds,

“This is a leading edge event that we are proud to see come to Bournemouth International Centre. Through their groundbreaking research and clinical work, these two societies are making a dramatic difference to many people’s lives.”

The three-day conference is taking place in the Tregonwell Hall, with an adjoining exhibition featuring pharmaceutical companies in the Purbeck Hall. The programme includes a plenary, parallel sessions, plus a number of workshops running in breakout suites. There will be almost 300 poster presentations across some 35 categories, each moderated by a British and Dutch expert in the field.

A highlight of the programme will be the presentation of the Medawar medal and van Rood award for the most outstanding scientific basic and clinical presentations. Both awards will be presented at the Congress Dinner Dance in the venue’s Solent Hall.

Making the most of the coastal location, Kidney Research UK, who funds research to find causes, prevention and treatments for kidney disease, is holding a 5k Fun Run on Thursday 12 March on behalf of the congress, to coincide with World Kidney Day.

Runners will meet at Bournemouth International Centre at 6.30am where they can pick up a T-shirt before the run – starting 6.45am – along Bournemouth promenade to Boscombe Pier. Runners can run or walk back along the beach. Every runner will be awarded a medal.

“It’s very appropriate that the BTS/NTV Annual Congress coincides with World Kidney Day and we’re delighted that they’ve chosen to make the most of our location by organising a sponsored fun run along the promenade to raise money for a great cause,”

says Pat Coyne.
